Spanish pet retailer Tiendanimal recorded 1,418 successful adoptions through its online adoption platform in 2025. More than 2,500 dogs and cats were featured on Adopta con Tiendanimal during the year, with over half finding new homes.

The free platform, launched in late 2024, connects animal shelters with prospective adopters across Spain. More than 370 shelters registered in 2025, representing 23.22 per cent of the country's estimated 1,608 animal shelters.

Andalusia accounted for the largest share of adoptions, at 43.15 per cent, followed by Madrid with 15.09 per cent and Catalonia with 8.23 per cent. Córdoba, Almería and Seville were among the provinces with particularly high adoption figures.

Cats proved more popular than dogs, accounting for 59 per cent of all adoptions compared with 41 per cent for dogs. Age also played an important role in adoption patterns. Among dogs, those aged between one and three years accounted for 42.45 per cent of adoptions, followed by adult dogs aged three to eight years at 34.38 per cent. Puppies represented 11.57 per cent, while senior dogs accounted for just 9.29 per cent.

A similar pattern emerged among cats. Animals aged between six months and two years represented 49.01 per cent of adoptions, while adult cats accounted for 46.27 per cent. Only 1.61 per cent of adopted cats were over ten years old.

Size was another determining factor among dogs. Medium-sized animals accounted for 49.4 per cent of adoptions, followed by small and toy breeds at 27.4 per cent. Large dogs represented 18.2 per cent, while giant breeds accounted for just 2.7 per cent.

By contrast, gender appeared to have relatively little influence, with adoptions distributed almost equally between male and female animals.

The findings are presented in Tiendanimal’s first Mi historia continúa contigo (My story continues with you) report, which analyses adoption activity recorded on its platform rather than the Spanish adoption market as a whole.
