The Spanish-Portuguese pet specialist Tiendanimal is celebrating its 20th anniversary. According to the company, what began in 2006 as an online shop for dog and cat products in Málaga has developed into a comprehensive range of services comprising 132 high-street shops, 14 veterinary clinics and 72 pet grooming salons across the Iberian Peninsula. The company also places a strong emphasis on responsible pet ownership and adoptions.
Milestones in the company’s history: After starting out as an online shop, Tiendanimal opened its first branch in Málaga in 2013. The 50th branch followed in 2019. Expansion into Portugal began in 2022 with the opening of a branch in Aveiro. In 2023, the company surpassed the one-million-customer mark in its Premium Club. Last year, Tiendanimal reached the 100-branch mark with new branches in Mataró and Valdepeñas.
The company has also expanded its activities in the field of animal welfare in recent years. In 2023, it launched the ‘Tiendanimal Educa 2.0’ educational programme in partnership with Royal Canin. In workshops at primary schools, children are taught about topics such as animal welfare, empathy and responsible pet ownership. According to the company, more than 17,000 children have taken part in the programme to date.
This was followed in 2024 by the launch of the free platform “Adopta con Tiendanimal”. It brings together animal welfare organisations and potential pet owners in Spain and is designed to facilitate the rehoming of dogs, cats and other animals. Using various search filters, interested parties can search by animal species, age, size and location, amongst other criteria. According to the company, the milestone of 2,000 animals rehomed via the platform was reached in 2026. At the same time, Tiendanimal now collaborates with hundreds of animal welfare organisations.
The company also supports animal welfare organisations through donations in kind. In 2024, Tiendanimal reported that it had exceeded the one-million-kilogramme mark for donated pet food. In addition, the company initiates relief efforts for affected animals and organisations in times of particular emergency, such as following storms or forest fires.
“Celebrating our 20th anniversary means, above all, celebrating the trust that millions of people have placed in us to support them in caring for their pets,” explained Caroline Arrú, co-initiator of the ESG committee and Head of Marketing at Tiendanimal. The company has evolved from a small e-commerce provider based in Málaga into an industry-leading organisation on the Iberian Peninsula. However, the aim remains to improve the lives of animals and their owners. In the coming years, Tiendanimal intends to further promote responsible adoption in particular. According to the company’s assessment, challenges remain in this regard, particularly with animals that are more difficult to rehome due to their age, size or specific health conditions.
