The German pet market grew by 2.4 per cent

Overall sales of 4.325 bn euros (previous year: 4.223 bn euros) in speciality stores and supermarkets at consumer prices and thus an increase in sales of 2.4 per cent was the outcome for the German pet market in 2019. In addition, online sales generated 705 mio euros (previous year: 625 mio euros), while wild bird food accounted for 125 mio euros (previous year: 100 mio euros).
The total sales of the pet sector in Germany thus passed the 5 bn euro threshold for the first time, reaching 5.155 bn euros (previous year: 4.948 bn euros). These figures were released by the Industrieverband Heimtierbedarf (IVH) and the Zentralverband Zoologischer Fachbetriebe (ZZF).
Good growth was observed in the segments of dog food (1.507 bn euros, +4.2 per cent), cat food (1.596 bn euros, +1.2 per cent), food for ornamental fish (53 mio euros, +1.9 per cent) and food for other pets (87 mio euros, +2.5 per cent). Only the category of food for cage birds declined by 1.5 per cent to 65 mio euros.
The overall market for pet requisites and accessories passed the 1 bn barrier for the first time, rising by 2 per cent to 1.017 bn euros (previous year: 997 mio euros). Once again, the strongest growth was in the segments of dog accessories (215 mio euros, +6.4 per cent) and cat accessories (208 mio euros, +2 per cent).
