Pet supplies market grows by 1.5 per cent

With overall sales in pet stores and supermarkets totalling 4.2 bn euros, the German pet supplies sector grew by 1.5 per cent in 2018. Online sales generated an added 625 mio euros, while sales of wild bird food were worth 100 mio euros. The total sales volume of 4.948 bn euros means that the sector has maintained the high level of previous years and continues its positive development.
The dog food market grew by 4.5 per cent to 1.45 bn euros in bricks and mortar stores. Sales of cat food declined slightly by 0.4 per cent to 1.58 bn euros. In the small animal segment, food sales were down by 2.3 per cent to 85 mio euros, while sales in the ornamental fish food segment also declined (52 mio euros, -3.7 per cent). However, sales of food for cage birds experienced an upward trend, growing by 1.5 per cent to 66 mio euros.
The pet requisites and accessories segment grew by 1 per cent with sales of 997 mio euros, with the strongest growth in the dog accessory segment (202 mio euros, +5.2 per cent) and cat accessories (204 mio euros, +3 per cent). Cat litter sales were down by 1.4 per cent (282 mio euros), as were sales of requisites and accessories for small animals (95 mio euros, -4 per cent) and for cage birds (32 mio euros, -5.9 per cent). On the other hand, sales in the ornamental fish segment rose by 2.2 per cent to 182 mio euros.
