A global study by Mars shows that concerns about pets’ health, behaviour and background are holding potential adopters back. With a new ‘Adoption Hub’, the company aims to provide information and practical support on all aspects of pet adoption.
According to the company, more than 26,000 people across 14 countries were surveyed for the study, which was published in the run-up to the ‘Mars Global Adoption Weekend 2026’. The study builds on findings from the “Mars State of the Pet Homelessness Project” and examines the barriers people face when adopting a pet.
According to the study, 58 per cent of current pet owners did not adopt their pet. At the same time, 28 per cent expressed a desire to adopt a pet from a shelter in the future – provided that appropriate advice and support are available.
