APPA’s newly published ‘Dog Report’, based on the 2025 ‘National Pet Owners Survey’, provides nationally representative insights into the economic outlook, key trends and emerging product opportunities within the dog-owning segment. The most up-to-date and comprehensive source of data on dog ownership in the US currently available can be purchased here in the online shop.

A brief insight reveals that the number of households with dogs rose to 71 million US households in 2025 (+4 per cent compared with the previous year). Dog owners are increasingly adopting a value-driven, budget-conscious approach to looking after their dogs and are seeking ways to optimise their regular purchases.

Retailers offering a combination of competitive prices and convenience are the most popular among dog owners. A function-oriented, value-driven mindset is reshaping product preferences. Despite tighter budgets in discretionary spending categories, dog owners continue to purchase products associated with interaction, preventative care and functional daily grooming. Dog owners rely on a mix of solutions for daily needs at home, support from trusted family members and friends, and professionals for more specialised care.
