Alex McKinnon, Founder and CEO of Kinn Inc., has released what his company describes as a groundbreaking guide to transforming pet care facilities and operations through responsible, measurable practices. Titled Sustainability in Pet Care: Lessons in Leadership, Innovation, and Sustainability from the Frontlines of Pet Care, the book is presented as the first written specifically for pet professionals to address pets, people, planet and profits simultaneously. As part of its commitment to measurable progress across the sector, the Pet Sustainability Coalition is spotlighting this new resource from member company Kinn Inc.

More than 20 interviews with pet care experts

Drawing from more than 30 years of executive leadership and interviews with over 20 pet care experts, McKinnon’s book delivers industry-specific guidance spanning facility design, daily workflows, staff training and resource use. According to the company, it offers practical strategies to design facilities that support animal health and reduce stress, improve outcomes through enrichment and safe cleaning practices, make informed decisions about water, energy, materials, and waste thatreduce unnecessary consumption as well as streamline workflows so staff can devote more time to hands-on animal care.

One insight from the book, highlighted in the press statement, reads: ‘For dogs, enrichment and training are essential tools for improving welfare. Because a dog’s strongest sense is smell, just 10 minutes of scent-based enrichment can have a similar calming and confidence-building effect as approximately 40 minutes of walking.’ Find out more on https://petsustainability.org/.
