In a press release, manufacturer Protix reports on a study showing that two different types of wet food containing a combination of PureeX insect protein and ProteinX insect meal were very well received and eagerly eaten by 170 dogs, indicating excellent acceptance. The study also examined dog owners' perceptions of insect-based wet food and concluded that they rated the texture, aroma and appearance of the food very positively.
The study involved 170 small and medium-sized dogs that were fed two diets: one consisting exclusively of PureeX/ProteinX (from black soldier fly larvae) and a hybrid version with added chicken meat. The animals switched diets after two days; the owners were not aware of the ingredients. Both types of food were equally well accepted, with no significant differences. Typical positive behaviours included tail wagging, complete consumption and lip licking. The owners rated both types of food 7 out of 10 points on a sensory scale. 82% would recommend the insect-based food and 81% would recommend the hybrid food.
PureeX consists of minimally processed insect protein from black soldier fly larvae, is considered hypoallergenic, easily digestible and, according to the manufacturer, has antioxidant properties. Protix offers the product in a fresh and frozen version, which is therefore suitable for wet food and as a fresh ingredient in extruded pet food.
