The number of Japanese households that own a dog or a cat increased significantly in 2021, according to a national survey of dog and cat ownership by the Japan Pet Food Association.
380 000 new dog-holding households and 360 000 cat-owning households equate to a 22.2 and 17.9 per cent increase as compared with 2019. In particular, the cat population continues to increase moderately, with a rise in young owners in their 20s to 30s.
