Nearly one in two households in the UK has a pet according to a study by the Pet Food Manufacturers Association (PFMA).
It reports that twelve million households, equivalent to 44 per cent of all households, own at least one pet. Dogs are the most popular pet (24 per cent), followed by cats (17 per cent) and indoor fish (8 per cent).
Outdoor fish (5 per cent) and rabbits (2 per cent) come next. The PFMA estimates the number of pets in the UK at 54 million.
