New report on the US pet food market

According to Research and Markets, the leading 200 companies account for an annual revenue of about $47 bn

The US pet food manufacturing industry includes around 200 companies with combined annual revenue of about $47 bn. This is the result of the new “Pet Food Manufacturing Report” released by the market research company Research and Markets. According to the report, major companies include divisions of Nestlé (Nestlé Purina Petcare company); Procter & Gamble (“Iams”); Colgate-Palmolive (“Science Diet” and “Prescription Diet”); Mars (“Pedigree” and “Whiskas”); and Del Monte (“9Lives”, “Gravy Train”, “Milk-Bone”, and “Meow Mix”). The industry is highly concentrated, with the eight largest companies accounting for about 85 per cent of sales. The report also gives information on the composition of the market. According to Research and Markets, major products are dry and canned dog and cat food. Dry dog food accounts for about 45 per cent of industry revenue and canned cat food for about 25 per cent. Dry foods include semi-moist products. Canned cat foods may be fish-based or meat-based.
