Due to rising Covid-19 infection rates, retailers in Germany have been forced to largely close since 16 December until at least 11 January. Those not affected throughout Germany include pet shops, feed suppliers, food retailers and drugstores, which have been classified as essential retail outlets.
In contrast to the first lockdown in March, DIY stores and garden centres must now also close. Pet departments of DIY and garden centres that can be separated from the rest of the sales area, for example by a separate entrance, can remain open in some locations if the local health authority gives its approval.
