The company's history dates back to 1993 and the opening of the first pet store. In 1995, the pet chain adopted its current name Bethowen in honour of the charming St. Bernard dog from the popular film of the same name.
The pet retailer fast developed into a strong player in the Russian pet product market. Today Bethowen is the market leader with more than 110 pet stores in Russia. 100 of them are located in Moscow and the others in regional urban centres. Bethowen also operates its own online store, featuring a wide assortment of products for each pet category. 18 private label brands, which are manufactured entirely at leading European factories, have been added to the company's portfolio. The retailer employs 1 500 staff and it runs its operations under the slogan "Happy family!". The pet retailer says that the main target of its team is to bring joy to its employees, customers and pets.
In August, George Chkareuli was appointed as the new CEO of Bethowen, having worked for the past ten years as the company's CFO. He holds an MBA from Emory University (USA) and has an honours degree in theoretical physics from the Tbilisi State University in Georgia.
Following his appointment, George Chkareuli commented: "The key to our future is to understand the needs of our customers, their desires and expectations. We will deliberately engage in this and develop our business in this direction, where we will provide our customers and their pets with maximum benefit and joy. All our plans are focused on holding our leading position in the pet market and on  development of new customer services."
