Since the Slovenian pet product market has only been developing since the start of the 1990s, Levstek was one of its pioneers. His company has grown from modest beginnings to become one of the main suppliers to the pet supplies trade, and sales in excess of € 6 mio were reported in 2007. The meteoric rise of Vetpet has resulted in it receiving several awards as the fastest growing and most successful firm in Slovenia.Vetpet employs around 40 people who, according to Marko Levstek, "are dedicated to pets by heart and have a wide range of knowledge about them." The Vetpet team also includes two veterinary surgeons as well as a number of university graduates.
17 pet storesIn addition to the wholesale business, Marko Levstek also owns a subsidiary company which specialises in running pet stores. This company trades under the name of Alfapet d.o.o. and currently operates 17 modern pet stores under the Zootic logo. Plans are in hand to increase the number of stores to 20 by next year. Including sales staff, Alfapet has a workforce of approx. 100 people. The stores are between 100 and 250 m² in size and are located in busy shopping centres, which are very popular in Slovenia. Last year Alfapet reported sales of over € 5 mio in its pet shops.
