Record-breaking attendance to Atlantic City
Approximately 8,000 buyers from 2,441 firms attended the 15th Annual Pet Industry Spring Trade Show in Atlantic City. More than 575 manufacturers and distributors exhibited pet products in 1,028 booths – 72 booths more than the 2002 Spring trade show. The organizer – H.H. Backer Associates – credited the show’s long-standing location for the show’s strong attendance. The company celebrated its 15th anniversary in Atlantic City with a variety of free educational seminares that helped retailers and distributors learn more about marketing, advertising and better business practices.
Alliance between P&G and VPI
The Iams Company, a subsidiary of Procter & Gamble, purchased 500,000 shares of Veterinary Pet Services’ (VPSI) common stock at $12 per share for a total of $ 6 million. VPSI is the parent company of Veterinary Pet Insurance Company, which is held the largest pet medical insurance provider in the United States. Iams now owns an 8.9 percent stake in VPSI.
According to VPSI less than one-half of 1 percent of pet owners in the U.S. has pet health insurance. By comparison, Sweden has the highest percentage of insured dogs and cats in the world with 49 percent. In the United Kingdom, 14 percent of dogs and 5 percent of cats are insured.
“Iams is a pet well-being company and we believe pet health insurance is an idea whose time has come in this country”, said Jeffrey P. Ansell, president of Iams. “As advanced human medical technology is increasingly used to benefit dogs and cats, more people need help with unplanned veterinary expenses for their four-footed family members. We’re committed to helping increase the adoption of pet health insurance, and we’re demonstrating this by taking a minority ownership in VPI.”
