Algiecel opens microalgae facility in Denmark

Danish microalgae company Algiecel has opened a production facility at Novonesis’ enzyme manufacturing site in Kalundborg. From 2027, the company expects to produce 12 tonnes of microalgal biomass a year there for pet food and cosmetics customers, as an alternative to fish oil.

The new reactor has a total volume of 5,500 litres, of which 3,240 litres are used to grow the algae, compared with 700 litres in the pilot system. According to Algiecel, this raises its capacity almost fivefold. The plant runs on CO₂ captured from a biogas plant on site and is built from identical modular units, so that further capacity can be added as demand grows. The opening follows a funding round of DKK 60 m (around €8 m) closed in 2024.
