Oterra, one of the world’s leading suppliers of natural colours, has announced a strategic partnership with Swiss innovator Seprify to introduce a plant-based whitening ingredient that replaces titanium dioxide across food and beverage applications. Based on patented cellulose technology, the new solution delivers true opacity and brightness at lower loadings, is free from microplastics and achieves up to 80% lower CO₂ emissions, supporting the shift towards sustainable, clean-label formulations, according to the company’s own information.
Oterra is known for its natural, pet-safe colour solutions. The new whitening ingredient is said to be food safe and nano-compliant, providing a reliable, pet-safe alternative to titanium dioxide while maintaining performance and visual appeal.
Validated across more than 15 categories and compliant in both EU and US markets, the ingredient disperses easily, remains stable under light, heat and varying pH, and offers neutral flavour and odour, according to Oterra. Produced from microcrystalline cellulose sourced from 100% renewable, FSC-certified virgin wood pulp, it combines environmental responsibility with industrial scalability.
The partnership unites Oterra’s global market reach and application expertise with Seprify’s advanced materials science, signalling a decisive step towards safer, more sustainable colour systems.
