The American Pet Products Association (APPA) has announced the publication of its latest Fish & Reptile Report. The basis of this 200-page research paper is APPA’s National Pet Owners Survey on saltwater fish, freshwater fish and reptile owners.

Fish and reptile ownership is experiencing strong growth, with enthusiasts expanding their collections and investing in higher-quality, customised habitats. Among fishkeepers, 77% now own two or more fish ‒ a 7% increase since 2018 ‒ while single-fish ownership has dropped 19%. Saltwater fish owners, in particular, are upgrading to larger tanks: 44% have 212 ‒ 473 litre setups (up 10% from 2023) and 34% now own even larger tanks, a 17% rise. This trend reflects not only an expanding hobby but also a willingness to spend more on premium, high-capacity systems. Acrylic and custom-built tanks are gaining popularity, with 50% of fish owners now using acrylic and 43% of saltwater enthusiasts opting for personalised setups. Aquarium lighting is another growing investment, embraced by both saltwater and freshwater owners to enhance tank aesthetics and aquatic health.

Reptile ownership shows similar enthusiasm, led by turtles and tortoises (43%), followed by lizards (29%) and snakes (22%). While lizard ownership has declined, snake ownership has surged by 22% since 2023. Younger generations are driving this momentum: Gen Z now represents 33% of reptile owners, a 27% increase in a year, while Millennials dominate fishkeeping, making up 46% of saltwater and 38% of freshwater fish owners.

Pet owners demonstrate deep emotional bonds with their animals ‒ 51% of fish owners and 64% of reptile owners buy gifts, spending more than ever before. Many also plan for their pets’ futures, with a third naming caretakers and around a quarter setting aside financial provisions.

In terms of retail behavior, specialty fish and reptile stores remain vital, with 64% of owners relying on them for information, but digital influence is rapidly expanding. Social media use among saltwater fish owners for information has jumped 39% since 2022, while the internet is now the primary source for reptile care information with 53%. This blend of in-store expertise and online engagement reflects a modern, tech-savy pet community.
