The good weather is returning, and with it the number of unsterilised litters of cats in cat colonies is increasing. Kiwoko, the largest pet store chain in Iberia, is therefore starting a food collection campaign - “No cat without its can” - today, 11 April, to help ensure that these cats do not go hungry. The campaign will run until 24 April. Donations can be made in all Kiwoko shops.

The ultimate goal of the campaign is to collect as many kilograms of canned food and other types of food as possible, in order to send them to various shelters and associations with which Kiwoko collaborates and which specialise in helping these cat colonies.

According to data from the Affinity Foundation's 2023 Abandonment and Adoption Study, more than 288 000 cats and dogs were collected due to abandonment during that year. Furthermore, according to this report, the arrival of cats at shelters and animal protection centres is higher at 43 per cent during the second four months of the year, due to the fact that cat reproduction is seasonal and unwanted litters are one of the main reasons for abandonment.

With the advent of the Animal Welfare Act, local councils also have civil responsibility for all stray cats. According to the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and Agenda 2030, “cat colonies are controlled thanks to shared work and the pooling of public resources, municipal responsibility, and the voluntary participation of citizens involved in the care and feeding of cats”.

This is why, as Caroline Arrú, chief marketing and customer officer of Kiwoko, concludes, "to add one more grain of sand to this social cause, our mission is to join forces both to raise awareness among citizens about responsible pet ownership and to promote their protection and welfare. With 'No cat without a can', we hope that no cat colony goes hungry and we applaud the work done by hundreds of shelters and associations in Spain focused on this cause".
