Josef Rettenmaier, co-founder and longstanding managing director of German corporate group J. Rettenmaier & Söhne (JRS), passed away on 23 March at the age of 97.
The pet sector has lost an impressive character with his passing.His achievements included building up the grain and oil mill established in 1878 into a globally powerful industrial company in the field of innovative functional cellulose and plant fibre products. Still an independent, proprietor-run organisation even now, the JRS Group employs over 3 500 staff worldwide in more than 90 production and distribution locations. With its sustainable green JRS plant fibre technology, the company is active in the fields of health, nutrition and resource-conserving technical applications in virtually all areas of life. Its litter and hygiene products play a leading role in the pet supplies sector.
In its obituary, the company describes Josef Rettenmaier as a striking personality with entrepreneurial vision. He was also involved in a number of social, cultural, religious and political organisations, institutions and initiatives. Rettenmaier was the recipient of many awards including the Federal Cross of Merit, the Staufer Medal and the "Wirtschaftsmedaille" Business Medal of the state of Baden-Württemberg and the Order of St. Sylvester.
