Preston founded Pets At Home, the UK’s biggest retailer of pet-related products, in 1991 when he opened the first shop in Chester. In 1999, further funds were raised to acquire US-owned competitor Petsmart for £ 70 million, a move which increased the number of stores to 140. By 2007, the 200th store opened in Barnstaple and in 2010, Pets at Home was acquired by KKR, a private equity house, in a deal worth £ 955m. The sale also saw Anthony leave the board, but still today he remains a minority shareholder with a 4% stake in the business.
