The Belgian pet supplies chain Tom & Co. is likely to open its first store in France at the end of June in Hellemes, close to Lille. The store will have a retail area of 295 m², but will not stock any live animals. Tom & Co., a subsidiary of the Delhaize food retailing group, operates 118 stores in Belgium.
The French accessories manufacturer Zolux intends to open a branch in Italy this spring.
The aquatics firm Tetra has opened a sales office for eastern Europe in Warsaw. Sales manager Peter Podsiedlik is responsible for the new store.
The French company EPE is expected to move its administrative offices and warehouse the short distance from Guebwiller to Soultz in the summer. There the company has a 3 500 m2 site at its disposal.
In the first quarter of 2007, Fressnapf opened a total of 15 new stores, six of them outside of Germany. In Denmark two new Maxi-Zoos opened, in Köge and Aalborg. And in Bourg-les-Valence, France's 14th Maxi-Zoo store was launched.  The other three new outlets outside of Germany were in the Swiss town of Vernier, close to Geneva, in San Donà di Piave in northern Italy and in Braunau, Austria.
 
PLMA: 70 countries to participateAt the World of Private Label in Amsterdam, which takes place on 22nd and 23rd May in the RAI Exhibition Centre, the organiser, the Private Label Manufacturers Association, is expecting over 3 000 exhibition stands, manufacturers from 70 countries and 30 national and regional pavilions. There will also be separate halls for food and non-food products, seminars ahead of the fair and a new product expo display. Hungary, Finland and Costa Rica are exhibiting for the first time. www.plmainternational.com
 
Warmer seas can spell disaster for large corals According to a report published by the Environmental News Network, a professor at California State University/Northridge has warned that large coral species are disappearing from some parts of the Caribbean. This could eventually have a profound effect not just on the coral makeup of the reefs themselves, but on the habitats that large corals create, and on the other animals that such habitats shelter, with consequences for both the marine aquarium industry and hobby.Peter Edmunds, a biology professor at Northridge, claims that warmer seas (probably a result of global warming) allied to higher pollution levels, plus overfishing, are contributing to the effect.
