In an effort to revitalise marine life, Purina is collaborating with marine conservation organisation Oyster Heaven, which will create new oyster reefs off the coast of North Norfolk. The goal is to anchor at least four million individual oysters to help restore healthy marine ecosystems by improving water quality and creating a habitat for a variety of species.
Oyster Heaven plans to deploy the first batch of specially designed clay bricks, known as ‘mother reefs,’ which will serve as a habitat for young oysters and pave the way for large-scale deployment. By the end of 2026, 40,000 ‘Mother Reefs’ with a total of four million young oysters are to be installed. In collaboration with Norfolk Seaweed, a local family-run aquaculture company, they will work together to install new oyster reefs, drawing on their in-depth knowledge of the local marine environment.
Purina is actively committed to restoring marine habitats across Europe. In collaboration with various partners, a total area of 1,500 hectares – equivalent to 3,700 football pitches – of marine habitats is to be restored by 2030. In addition to the recently announced project to use oyster reefs in the UK, further restoration measures supported by Purina are already underway in France, the Netherlands, Norway and Portugal.
