The Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC) invites everybody to join the Plastic Recovery July, an initiative that addresses the pet industry’s plastic waste, which largely goes unrecycled. “We believe action can’t wait for a perfect solution, and we’re offering a practical way to make a measurable impact,” explains Jim Lamancusa, CEO of the PSC. This latest industrywide activation has the goal to recover 250 000 lbs of nature and oceanbound plastic in the month of July.
Plastic pollution threatens the places we and our pets call home. The pet industry uses over 300 mio pounds of plastic packaging each year, and 91 per cent of it ends up in landfills, oceans, or nature. “Tackling this crisis is a shared responsibility to ensure a healthier planet for future generations of people and pets alike”, says PSC.
Through a network of projects worldwide, Re-Purpose recovers plastic that would otherwise pollute nature, builds recycling infrastructure where it’s needed most, and empowers communities. To date, they’ve recovered over 77 mio pounds of plastic. The PSC wants to collect at least 250 000 lbs of nature-bound plastic in this July.
There are two different ways to get involved. “If you have a brand and you'd like to contribute you'll be able to claim a certain amount of plastic that's recovered for your entire brand”, explains Lamancusa. “You can also get your consumers engaged to offset and recover plastic and if you can't do it as a brand you can do it as an individual.”
The other way is to sponsor the initiative and can activate employees, customers, and stakeholders through the Plastic Pawsitive Team Challenge. It's a fun, competitive way to recover plastic, climb the leaderboard, and boost community engagement. As a sponsor, you'll receive a Custom Dashboard to track the plastic recovery progress in real-time, on-the-ground insights and waste worker stories, a media kit and public acknowledgment from PSC and its partner Re-Purpose Global.
Recognizing the power of collective action, the American Pet Products Association (APPA) is matching 50 000 dollars in contributions for Plastic Recovery July. Company sponsorships start at 1 000 dollars.
