The catastrophe in Japan is having a considerable impact on the koi market in Europe, with suppliers stepping up requests to dealers to buy fish from Japan before a threatened import ban is implemented. Various wholesalers have told PET global that efforts are in hand to import as many specimens as possible from Japan.The harmlessness of koi is being confirmed among other things by tests for radioactive contamination in Japan and in the destination countries. Since an import ban could be implemented along with a no-fly zone above the Asian country at any time, many koi suppliers are currently importing as many fish as they can.
