Matt Simister has been the successor to interim CEO Peter Prichard since September. In this introductory interview, the experienced executive repeatedly emphasizes the vital role played by the company’s people. Their passion for pets sets Fressnapf | Maxi Zoo apart from other retailers; it is the group’s USP.

PET worldwide invited Simister to discuss his role within the multinational company, how the country organizations are set to develop, and what changes he intends to make.

You come from Tesco, a giant in traditional food retail. How did you make the leap into our industry, and where do you see the greatest synergies between your experience there and the specific dynamics of the pet industry?

I had been at Tesco for 30 years, the last nine of which I had spent on the executive board. In fact, I was the longest-standing member of the Tesco executive team when I left. But I'm only 52. I feel that I still have the energy to do something different.

At a certain point, one might think that a fresh challenge would be beneficial. It is also to be expected that the team would benefit from new leadership.  So, I was open to a new challenge outside the business.

When I received the Fressnapf brief, I found it very interesting There were obvious similarities. Running a multinational retail business is something I have been doing for many years, and have developed deep experience in how to make the most of  Group Capability with local market ownership.,

I also like the pet industry. I already had some knowledge of it, and I obviously know a bit more now after six months. As I met more people during the process, I came to appreciate the business and the culture of Fressnapf | Maxi Zoo even more.

In summary, I believed I would be able  to add value to the specific opportunity facing Fressnapf. I also recognised that there are things I have to learn, and I thought that would be exciting too. I thought it would be a good opportunity for both sides.

Our primary objective is to provide exceptional customer service, which is fundamental to success as a retailer. Our company is proud to have a highly trained workforce, capable of serving a wide range of customers. I believe that the core role of a retailer is the same, regardless of whether it's a grocer or a pet specialist.
