For the British pet supplies sector, Petindex in Birmingham is the main event in the domestic calendar. However, big brands were missing and the visitor figures fell well below the expectations of most exhibitors. "Not even ten per cent of UK pet product dealers had registered prior to the show," one disappointed small manufacturer of hygiene products reported. Although there were a good number of visitors in the Petindex hall on the Sunday, the attendance dwindled markedly on the Monday and Tuesday. There was evidently no lack of buyers from UK and even European pet product chains, however, as many manufacturers noticed. Exhibitors from abroad in particular, including Ocean Nutrition from Belgium, Lantmännen Bozita from Sweden and Flexi from Germany along with various firms setting up as sub-exhibitors on the stands of their wholesalers and importers, thus got their money's worth. British innovations Looking down the list of exhibitors, one comes across innumerable small companies that were often only established shortly before the fair and are now seeking to enter the sector, some of them with innovative products. The following are notable examples:
The "KatKabin" outdoor cat house by Brinsea Products Ltd. is a unique and innovative cat shelter that provides the cat with all the warmth, comfort and safety it is used to indoors. "The interest in our new product was high," managing director Ian Pearce said after the fair.
Alexandra von Ziechmann presented a range of disposable cat toilets, trays and sleeping pods under her own brand "Feloo". They are made from cardboard and will be available in a fabulous range of colours and shapes.
Designer petwear was presented by Puchi, the company of Karen Easter. She has designed a range of collars, leads, T-shirts, coats and accessories and has customers including Victoria Beckham, Katie Price, Paul O'Grady, Robbie Williams, Elton John, and the Osbournes, to name but a few.
The next Glee/Petindex is from 20 to 22 September 2009.
