The independent pet food manufacturer Burgess Pet Care has announced a record GBP24,000 (€27,599) worth of food donations as part of its sixth annual Greyhound & Lurcher Takeover campaign. The initiative, which runs from 2–15 February, aims to raise awareness of the thousands of greyhounds and lurchers that end up in UK rescue centres every year and to recognise the work of those who care for them.

The Burgess Supadog Greyhound & Lurcher Two Week Takeover encourages consumers to nominate local rescue centres via the company’s website. Selected organisations will receive a share of more than 900 bags of Supadog Greyhound and Lurcher food. The donations are funded through a 20 pence (23 cent) contribution generated from each bag sold throughout the year.

Thousands of dogs abandoned or killed each year

Estimates suggest that around 2,800 greyhounds and lurchers are abandoned and picked up by local authorities annually, while thousands more are killed or passed on to rescue charities. Burgess Pet Care’s initiative aims to support these organisations with both practical aid and public awareness.

Suzanne Moyes, deputy managing director at Burgess Pet Care, said the company was proud to continue its backing for these deserving causes: ‛As a pet food manufacturer, we recognise the importance of good nutrition and long‑standing support for organisations working tirelessly for dog welfare. This annual campaign allows us to provide support to the incredible people and organisations that dedicate themselves to greyhounds and lurchers.’

Donations are a lifeline to rescues

Siobhan Hoppley, founder of Makants Greyhound Rescue, said the donations make a tangible difference: ‛We have been lucky enough to receive donations from this initiative four times in the past and with care costs rising year on year, it’s honestly a

lifeline. We’re so grateful for the people who took the time to nominate us and to the greyhound owners buying the food that makes this possible.’

Throughout the two‑week event, Burgess Pet Care will dedicate its social media channels to greyhounds and lurchers, sharing care advice, nutrition guidance, dogs looking for forever homes and stories from rescue centres. Nominations for independent rescue centres can be made via the Burgess Pet Care website.
