The Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC) has announced the release of 'The State of Sustainability in the Pet Industry', 2025 Edition. The first-of-its-kind report offers a comprehensive snapshot of where the pet industry stands on environmental and social progress and a roadmap for where it must go next, according to a press statement.
Funded by a grant from the World Pet Association, this report brings together insights from PSC’s Benchmark Assessment, PSC Accredited member insights, exclusive consumer data from Nextin and BBMG, and publicly available industry data, demonstrating PSC’s mission in action: to advance sustainability in the pet industry through collaboration, education, and innovation.
'Despite economic pressures and a complex regulatory landscape, the message from leading companies is clear: sustainability is a growth strategy,' said Jim Lamancusa, CEO of PSC, in the press release. 'We created this report to illuminate the path ahead. My hope is that it not only helps pet industry leaders understand the progress we are making together, but also inspires more companies to take the next step on their own sustainability journey.'
The report’s key insights
The PSC provided an overview the report’s three key insights in its press statement. It shows that pet parents are passionate about sustainable products. 84 per cent believe that companies should act on climate change, and they are significantly more likely to purchase environmentally friendly products.
The report also reveals that sustainability drives business value. From operational efficiency, risk mitigation, attracting talent and investor confidence, sustainability is a core driver of performance and compliance, it says.
The third and final key insight is that foundational strategy and data are essential. However, only 40 per cent of companies report on Scope 3 emissions, despite the fact that value chain emissions account for over 90 per cent of most companies’ environmental footprint.
As the only report of its kind in the pet industry, the 2025 edition translates data into actionable insights, such as consumer sentiment, innovation trends, risk reduction strategies, and best practices for embedding sustainability across the value chain.
