This year marks the first time that the Grand Research Prize for Veterinary Medicine has been awarded: the first recipient is Professor Henrik Elvang Jensen, a Danish veterinarian and professor of veterinary pathology at the University of Copenhagen. The prize is awarded annually by Agria in collaboration with the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and recognizes outstanding achievements in veterinary medicine and animal welfare.

The prize money of 1 million SEK (approximately 106,500 dollars) will be presented at a ceremony on November 26 at SLU in Uppsala, reports the pet insurance company. The aim of the award is to honor scientific work that sustainably strengthens animal health and welfare.

The jury is awarding the prize to Professor Henrik Elvang Jensen for his groundbreaking contributions to veterinary pathology and forensic veterinary science. His work has set new standards for the assessment and prevention of animal suffering, with enormous relevance for animal welfare and veterinary medicine both in the Nordic countries and internationally.

His research on fungal infections (mycoses), which are becoming increasingly important for animals and humans worldwide, is also internationally recognized. The diagnostic methods he has developed are now crucial for assessing the course of disease and treatment.
