An increasing number of people view their pets not just as companions, but as integral members of the family, playing a role similar to that of a child. A recent survey of cat and dog owners conducted by Agria Animal Insurance in Sweden shows this. Over half of those surveyed believe that their pet can replace a child, either completely or partially.
Notably, younger generations are significantly more likely to view dogs or cats as a substitute for children. According to the study, pets contribute significantly to a lively and fulfilling everyday life. Eighty-five per cent of respondents say that their dog or cat brings more joy and energy to their home.
Additionally, 81 per cent of cat owners and 75 per cent of dog owners say that they find important emotional security in their pets. The relationship with a pet is often experienced as being as intense as the bond between parents and children.
Furthermore, more than 60 percent of respondents see their pets as helpful in providing structure to their daily lives, for instance by establishing fixed feeding and walking times. According to the survey, this has a positive effect on general well-being and emotional stability. Dog owners in particular draw further parallels with parenthood, reporting more exercise, regular outdoor activities, and social interaction with other pet owners — aspects that cat owners mention less frequently.
