27.10.2006
Terrariums are considered a strong growth segment across Europe, with the industry offering a steadily expanding range of products. Here we feature a selection of what's available

A warm floor Italian company Prodac is offering two kinds of heating cables: "Prodacalor" is a cable manufactured with a thin resistance wire coated with silicone sheathing, suitable for heating only terrariums. The second, "Aquacalor", is a cable manufactured with a thin resistance wire, with double insulation and coated with silicone sheathing. It is especially designed for use also in aquariums. Both are available in the following lengths and ratings: 15 W (400 cm), 25 W (550 cm), 50 W (700 cm) and 80 W (900 cm). The heating cables can be connected to "Magicontrol", a safe and precise thermostat for regulating the temperature of the water when used in aquariums and the air temperature when used in terrariums. It connects to any heating cable up to 300 W. www.prodac.it Extensive food range For more than thirty years, the traditional "Lon" brand has been adding variety to the assortment of foods (flake, extruded, granulated, natural and freeze-dried foods) available for aquarium and terrarium animals all over Europe. Since the time of the typical flake feed, the assortment of foods produced by Czech company Aqua Tropic has expanded significantly. The company currently offers over forty types of feed for aquarium and terrarium animals, decorative fish and rodents. www.lon.cz Lamp stand Extend the life of heat lamps with the new reptile lamp stand from American company Zoo Med. This new smaller size is adjustable to a maximum height of 60 cm and a maximum length of 30 cm and is great for terrariums up to 75 litres. The lamp stand allows heat lamps to be securely mounted above a cage, preventing them from being knocked over or moved and reducing vibration. This increases safety and extends the burn life of heat lamps. www.zoomed.com Vitamin supplement "Tartavit" from Italian company Prodac is a vitamin complex solution that is ideal for reinforcing the immune system of turtles and small terrarium reptiles. "Tartavit" is perfect for accelerating calcification of the shell (carapace). It reactivates the vital functions of reptiles following hibernation and promotes the growth of young reptiles. www.prodac.it Individual reptile food Under its "Exoterra" family brand Hagen has developed a range of special foods that cater for most reptiles - herbivores, omnivores and even carnivores. The company states that the products take account of the special requirements of each group of reptiles. Thus the pelleted food range is an easily digestible food that is perfectly tailored to the food needs of the various species. It is packed in opaque "aroma-fresh" bags that protect it from the light, thereby conserving the vitamins and nutrients. No artificial colourings or flavour enhancers have been used, and the vitamins, minerals and amino acids added to the pellet food mean that no other supplements are required. The range comprises "Iguana adult" (a complete food for fully-grown iguanas), "Iguana juvenile" (complete food for young iguanas), "Dragon adult" (complete food for adult agama), "Dragon juvenile" (complete food for young agama), "Tortoise adult" (complete food for adult tortoises and box turtles) and "Aquatic Turtle" (complete food for adult aquatic and pond turtles). All varieties come in two pack sizes. www.hagen.com Unique products Established in 2000, the "Lucky Reptile" brand from German company Hoch has built up a good reputation in the German and European reptile market. The range includes the premium substrate "Eco Bark", the powerful humidifier "Super Fog" and advanced lighting solutions like "Halogen Sun" and "Compact UV Sun". The latest product is the "Thermo Socket" plus "Reflector Lamps", special lamp fixtures with steel reflector and wire mesh covers that can easily be mounted inside the terrarium. www.lucky-reptile.com Specialities for tortoises German company Stolzenberg has been selling its own blended tortoise food for 35 years. A world of adventure for reptiles German company Fackert has developed the new waterfall temple well to provide an attractive feature for terrariums. Framed by attractive animal images from the insect and reptile kingdom, the water flows from the source tank across rock and stone formations into the well. The temple well measures 27x33x9 cm and is composed of four modules that are fitted together. The feature can also be expanded by means of the rear wall system with the company's relief panels. The waterfall temple well is available in two colours, stone grey and sand beige. www.at-fackert.de Practical food Hagen makes it easy and practical to feed insects to your reptiles with the “Exoterra” range of tinned foods. The insects are cooked carefully to ensure that nutritional values, flavour and aroma are preserved and to soften the exoskeletons of the insects, making them more easily digestible. The connections between the collagen proteins are also split so that reptiles and amphibians can utilise them better. The company says that insects from the tin have the same nutritional value as live insects, but are easier to digest. The range comprises grasshoppers, grasshoppers XL, silkworm pupae, snails, mealworms, small crickets and crickets. They come in 34 g and 68 g tins. www.hagen.com Exotic animals German company Exoterra has been supplying live animals to national and international customers for 14 years. A newly built hall containing nearly 1,000 terrariums will be opened this year. For the new season the company once again offers very rare exotic animals, such as the “Pink Panther” (picture) from Madagascar. In addition to animals Exoterra also supplies terrariums and accessories. This range is expected to be expanded further with the extra space available in the new hall. www.exoterra.de Effective lighting German company Namiba Terra says that its “UV-Replux UV-Plus D3” compact lamps were assessed as being particularly effective photobiologically in an appraisal carried out in the Lighting Engineering Section of the Technische Universität Berlin. The company also states that only measuring instruments that operate using the spectrophotometric method according to DIN 5050 are permitted for the compulsory measurement of Vitamin D3 effective UV rays. www.namibaterra.de Clean tortoise tanks With the new “Turtle Clean 501” American company Zoo Med offers an external filter designed especially for use on tortoise tanks. “Turtle Clean 501” traps suspended particulate waste, removes odour and chemicals with activated carbon, and breaks down organic toxins with a biological filtration section. It is great for vivariums, box turtle pools and aquariums up to 114 litres. www.zoomed.com Bioland seal award German company JBL is the first manufacturer to be granted the highly prized Bioland seal, awarded to the new “Herbil” tortoise food. The grasses and herbs have been organically and biologically grown in accordance with the strict guidelines of the Bioland Association. The ingredients are then carefully dried and delivered to JBL without any additives. Tortoise experts, who have been testing the new “Herbil” for several months, have been surprised by the excellent quality of the Bioland raw ingredients. They admit they had not expected to find such a significant difference. After adding minerals and vitamins A and E, the JBL range now includes an absolutely top-class product for tortoises. The new containers are an attractive shade of orange and bear the same new typescript as the rest of the JBL “ProTerra” range for the terrarium. www.jbl.de
