Pet product sector creates employment

Pets continue to enjoy a high level of popularity in Europe, according to the European Pet Food Industry Federation (Fediaf). It reports that around 80 mio households in Europe have at least one pet.

While the number of dogs in Europe is put by Fediaf at over 68 mio, the cat population is in excess of 74 mio. 40 mio cage birds, 20 mio small animals and over 200 mio ornamental fish are also kept by pet owners.

Fediaf figures indicate that the pet product sector employs 100 000 people in the industry and is responsible for 900 000 jobs in related sectors. It also makes a significant contribution to the European economy, generating sales worth 35.5 bn euros in 2016.
