As of 31 December 2019, Tiendanimal had 64 outlets in Spain and Portugal. The average size of the stores is put at roughly 800 m² by the company. 15 stores were opened last year, along with five pet clinics, in Albacete, Lleida, Lugo, Sabadell, Sevilla, Valladolid, Saragossa and Jaen, plus seven in Madrid alone. This year Tiendanimal CEO Rafael Martinez Avial expects to open the same number of outlets: "15 stores and at least five veterinary practices are in the pipeline."
Tiendanimal is sticking to its strategy of reacting to market requirements and continuing its expansion process with regard to opening new stores while at the same time growing its online shop. "We are experiencing a boom in the pet product market and it is forecast that this upward trend will continue," emphasises Rafael Martinez Avial. He states that consumers in big cities have become considerably more aware regarding pet care and are therefore more inclined to invest in products and services for their pets. When opening new stores, Tiendanimal finds itself confronted by growing competition and above all rising rental charges, as Spain's economy is growing fast.

Products, services and trends

Tiendanimal offers a selection of more than 33 000 products as well as various services including grooming and wellness, adoption, veterinary consultations and agility.
With regard to the range, Rafael Martinez Avial notes four particularly prominent trends. First is the desire of customers for more natural and higher-quality food products that address similar health needs to human nutrition. Consumers also focus on the environment and sustainability, valuing brands whose products and packaging subscribe to this ideology. Accessories and equipment for pets must also have a modern design that fits in with the style of the home and pet owner. Finally, when it comes to dog grooming, more importance than ever is attached to product quality and services. "The range of services has been expanded steadily since the opening of the first store in 2013," reports Rafael Martinez Avial proudly. He predicts a key role for personalisation this year, especially with regard to food products, which will be more natural, healthier and of better quality.
