Jean Meyer is a biologist with a passion for his subject. He decided to leave his post as commercial director of an international company to make a career out of his chosen interest. The result was the birth of his company Aquabio International in early 1997

The French company, based in Puget sur Argens in Var province, specializes in the biological purification of all types of watercourses, including aquariums and ponds. Together with scientist friends, Jean Meyer has developed a process for regenerating ecosystems using microbiological organisms. The basic idea behind the process is to convert organic substances such as ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, which have a detrimental effect on aquatic life, naturally into nitrogen and water. The process has no genetic or chemical impact on the watercourse. “We manipulate living organisms with the aid of microorganisms, taking the utmost care in our work. Industrial manufacture of the products is thus not an option. I prefer to have the work carried out by people rather than machines,” Jean Meyer explains.
Aquabio’s range of operations also includes eliminating harmful organic substances from fountains.
There was a lot of scepticism initially regarding the new method – but its obvious success proved the biologist right. “We were constantly meeting people who are convinced like us of the importance of biological solutions,” says Meyer.
Aquabio now handles any form of water pollution: pollutants washed into a watercourse by rain are eliminated, as are excessive concentrations of algae. The French company proceeds very carefully, first analysing water samples to determine the problem and then formulating a suitable agent from microorganisms to counter it and restore the natural balance in the watercourse.
To expand its technique, Aquabio has renewed its production facilities. Its aim is to increase the concentration of microorganisms still further, making it possible to reactivate polluted waterways more quickly and further reduce the cost of biological water treatments. Jean Meyer believes the cost of biological water treatment to be up to ten times less than that of conventional forms of treatment.
Handy self-service packs have been created for the various applications.
Aquabio has been supplying its products in handy self-service packs since 1998. Four different applications are available, for garden ponds, aquariums, fountains and domestic cesspits. Depending on the application, the products are sold in garden centres, pet product stores or hypermarkets. Aquabio caters both for professional customers and hobbyists, and Jean Meyer says that this juxtaposition of the two sectors yields interesting synergy effects. To offer business clients an excellent service, company…
