Hundreds of animals living with their families in makeshift emergency shelters for refugees in northern Venezuela have received urgently needed veterinary care following the devastating earthquakes, reports Humane World for Animals. The animal rescue team from the animal welfare organisation has so far treated more than 350 animals, mainly dogs and cats, but also tortoises, rabbits and birds. The organisation is running temporary veterinary clinics in the four largest emergency shelters, which are managed by the United Nations International Organisation for Migration.

Humane World for Animals staff from Mexico, Costa Rica and the USA are caring for animals in emergency shelters such as the Polideportivo Stadium and the César Nieves Baseball Stadium in La Guaira, which together are housing more than 3,000 people. They are also providing assistance at other official and unofficial shelters…
