On the occasion of the latest World Animal Day on 4 October, countless pet videos were again shared, clicked and commented on in social networks. But not every animal appearing there has a cheerful story. The Belgian manufacturer Versele-Laga took the date as an opportunity to draw attention to the fate of animals in animal shelters.

For this purpose, the company launched its own social media campaign, which shows "pet stories" on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok that are not particularly cute. The main characters in these stories are animals from Flemish animal shelters, some of which were treated cruelly by their former owners. They were abandoned at the side of the road, left in the forest or even disposed of with the household rubbish. The neglected animals only narrowly escaped death and were fortunately taken in by an animal shelter.

"With our campaign, we want to point social media users in the direction of animal shelters," explains Sarah Lanckman, brand manager at Versele-Laga. The campaign videos were shot at the Ark van Pollare animal sanctuary in Belgium, one of the charities Versele-Laga supports.
