Annual spending on pet requisites has reached € 25 bn in the 27 member states of the European Union. This is the finding of a study by IFH Retail Consultants, a subsidiary of the Institut für Handelsforschung. Per capita expenditure by consumers in the EU is thus around € 50. A look at the different segments in the pet sector also reveals that dogs and cats predominate, according to IFH Retail Consultants. While people in the EU spend over € 10 bn per year on dogs and cats respectively, only € 1 bn is spent on fish, small animals and birds in each case. When it comes to product categories, around three-quarters of the total expenditure of European pet lovers goes on pet food. The amount spent on accessories, care products and on actually procuring the pet is much smaller by contrast.
