In 1868, a pharmacist named Polk Miller began formulating and selling health care products for dogs from his drug store in Richmond in Virginia. Originally inspired by his beloved hunting dogs, these were some of the first professionally developed treatments for pets. The products were extremely popular and pet owners grew to trust and depend on Miller's formulas. Soon, Miller focused more of his energy on these endeavours and started a company dedicated solely to pet products which he named after his favourite dog, Sergeant. This was the birth of Sergeant's Pet Care Products. In over 140 years the company has grown from one man's dedication to his own pets to become one of America's oldest and most respected manufacturers and marketers of pet supplies. The brand names of Sergeant's are widely recognised not only in America, but around the globe. From flea and tick remedies to natural pet care products, toys and more, Sergeant's is a leader in helping pets and their owners make life healthier, happier and more entertaining.Throughout its history, the company has been at the forefront of product development. In the early 1900s, for example, Sergeant's developed the first mange medicine for dogs. In the 1920s it developed worming products and other health remedies. In fact, Sergeant's medicines and dog foods were chosen for the sled dogs used by Commander Richard Byrd's expedition to the South Pole in 1928!Further advances in pet products continued throughout the 20th and into the 21st century. Sergeant's led the way in flea and tick treatment by introducing "Sergeant's Skip-Flea" shampoo for dogs in the 1940s. According to the company, this is still America's favourite flea and tick sham-poo. In 1962, Sergeant's introduced the "Sentry Flea and Tick Collar". Through dedication to scientific research and product development, Sergeant's became the leader in developing over-the-counter squeeze-on topical pest control products for pets by the 1990s. In the 2000s, the company has continued to develop industry-leading flea and tick pro-ducts, including the "Sergeant's" green line of products, which use natural active ingredients. It has also focused research and devel-opment efforts on health care products and supplements such as the "Petrodex" line of pet dental products.International growthWhile Sergeant's has been exporting products to international markets for quite some time, tremendous growth has been seen in this area over the past five years.
