20.09.2022

According to the study “Pet Food in the U.S. (September 2022)” by the Packaged Facts market research company, retail sales of dog and cat food in the USA attained a value of 40 bn dollars in 2021. This equates to an increase of 15 per cent compared with 2020. In the period from 2017 to 2021, dog and cat food recorded an annual growth rate of 11 per cent.

The study states that recent inflation in the price of pet food has only aided this growth to some extent, however, with sales growth being driven more by continuous premiumisation of the products. Sales of pet food are also benefiting from a greater focus on scientifically backed super-premium foods and treats with added health advantages. Packaged Facts reports that 38 per cent of dog owners and 36 per cent of cat owners welcome the idea of pet food based on scientific research.
