USA: big jump in the number of pets

Pet population growth in the wake of the pandemic brought the number of dogs to 96 mio in 2020, up by over 10 mio from 2019.

In the wake of Covid-19, the overall percentage of pet-owning households in the US increased from 54 per cent in 2019 to 56.6 per cent in 2020, according to the market research company Packaged Facts, which has launched the new study Pet Population and Ownership Trends in the US.

44 per cent of households own dogs, 25 per cent own cats and 12 per cent other pets like fish, small animals, reptiles and birds. Packaged Facts estimates that pet population growth in the wake of the pandemic brought the number of dogs to 96 mio in 2020, up by over 10 mio from 2019, and the number of cats to 32 mio, up by nearly two mio from 2019.

Pet acquisition has been especially high among the younger generation: The level of pet ownership increased by 25 cent among millennials, compared to only 9 per cent of their boomer counterparts.
