Tesco is selling its Polish business to the Salling Group, a Danish company, in its latest move to leave international markets and focus on the UK. Under the deal the Salling Group will acquire 301 stores and two distribution centres.
The Salling Group also owns the Netto Group, which currently has 386 outlets in Poland. Once approval has been obtained, the former Tesco stores are expected to be converted as quickly as possible to the new Netto concept.
The sale of the Polish business leaves Ireland and central European operations in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia as Tesco's only remaining major non-UK operations. Tesco has left Japan, South Korea, the US and Turkey in recent years. Most recently in March, it sold its Southeast Asian operations in Thailand and Malaysia.
Tesco chief executive Dave Lewis said: "We have seen significant progress in our business in central Europe" and the deal "allows us to focus in the region on our business in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia, where we have stronger market positions with good growth prospects."
