Obersten was a Greenland dog and the lead dog on Roald Amundsen’s expedition to the South Pole in 1911. He was the strongest and most intelligent of all dogs and led the sled team of Oscar Wisting, Amundsen’s closest companion. Obersten was also the only dog of the 11 surviving sled dogs from this expedition to return to Norway. Amundsen’s expedition to the South Pole was a success largely due to the tireless work rate of these Greenland dogs, which pulled the heavy sleds laden with equipment and provisions.
During the arduous journey, both men and dogs lived chiefly on fresh fish with a high content of omega-3 fatty acids. On returning from the expedition, Obersten lived a happy and contented life with the Wisting family in Norway, producing lots of puppies with his mate Lucy during the thirteen years of his life.

Sales around the globe

Its vision is to create an international brand that is synonymous with high-quality, healthy products linked to Norwegian quality and the history of Roald Amundsen. The company already markets Obersten products in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Italy and the UK. In autumn 2013 it extended its marketing to pet supplies retailers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Its wholesale partners are Woko-Tierbedarf GmbH in Leichlingen for Germany and Jos. Styger AG in Switzerland. Preparations are in hand for distribution in the USA too.
The Norwegian company states that its Obersten-Omega-3 product is a food-grade fish oil produced from mackerel, herring and anchovies. The fish derive from sustainable fishing in South America, according to Amundsen, and the fish oil has a 30 per cent content of omega-3. 18 per cent is eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and 12 per cent docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The oil is put into containers in a nitrogen atmosphere, ensuring a long shelf life…
