With its Hope Grows programme linked to the Sheba cat food brand, Mars Petcare aims to protect coral reefs. To this end it has put a promotional video online, with a donation directly supporting coral protection being triggered every time the video is viewed.
Mars has been engaged since 2008 in research and work on new methods for restoring coral reefs, which play a key role in climate protection. Its work and investment in this initiative has now given rise to the coral restoration programme Hope Grows. The Sheba Hope Reef in Indonesia, replanted in 2019 as part of this programme, is showing the progress that has already been achieved.
With the aid of star-shaped steel structures coated in sand - the reef stars - a foundation has been created on the ocean bed on which corals become established and build new colonies. Over 19 000 reef stars and more than 285 000 coral fragments were planted between two island communities in Sulawesi. These form one of the biggest restored coral reefs in the world. By 2029, 185 000 m² of coral reef is expected to be restored worldwide. Nature and environment conservation organisations such as the WWF, Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) together with The Nature Conservancy are supporting Hope Grows.
