Nearly 30 representatives of pet umbrella associations from the USA, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Austria, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Norway took part in the first virtual meeting of the newly established International Pet Advisory Council (IPAC). The meeting was instigated by Svein A. Fosså, president of the European Pet Organisation. Attending on behalf of the Zentralverband Zoologischer Fachbetriebe (ZZF) were the managing director, Gordon Bonnet, and scientific advisor Dr Stefan Hetz.
Challenges of global relevance facing the sector were discussed, not least against the background of the financially powerful animal welfare organisations, some of which are engaged in extremely radical action. The meeting participants aim to take initiatives in future including pooling their limited resources and publicly promoting the societal and social benefits of pet owning and the advantages it offers for species and nature conservation.
