In April the European Commission passed new regulations for the Product Environmental Footprint category for the pet food industry. Announcing the news, FEDIAF described this as an important milestone that would enable the industry to accurately gauge the environmental effects of its products. "The now officially approved method for calculating the environmental footprint of food for dogs and cats will help the industry to make transparent environmental information available on the basis of a European approach," said Pascale Bensman, chairman of FEDIAF'S Environment and Sustainability Working Group.
The environmental footprint is part of an initiative of the European Commission called "Building the Single Market for Green Products", which aims to harmonise communication of the environmental performance of products and organisations for manufacturers and consumers alike.
