The number of US households keeping a pet other than a cat or dog has increased by 10.8 per cent in the last five years to 12.2 per cent. This is revealed by a study from the market research company Packaged Facts. Only the bird segment constitutes an exception to this trend.
The rise was especially marked during the pandemic. The market for products for ornamental fish, reptiles and birds increased by 18.5 per cent in 2020 compared with the previous year. This exceeds even the figures for the overall market, which grew by 15.8 per cent in the same period.
According to the study, as of June 2021 only 4 per cent of pet owners had spent less than before on their pet in the previous twelve months. 33 per cent had spent more, however.
