It has been reported in Australia that at least ten dogs have died apparently after consuming raw beef mince produced by Maffra Knackery. Another 50 dogs were admitted to veterinary hospitals as a result of consuming the meat. According to newspaper reports, the company also trades as Backmans Meats and Backmans Greyhound Supplies and operates a store in Seaford, south-east of Melbourne.
There are now calls for stronger regulation of the pet food industry. Evidently even the statutory meat regulatory authority PrimeSafe could not force the manufacturer to recall the products.
Maffra Knackery only issued a voluntary recall of raw mince on 20 July, more than three weeks after the first casualties were reported. The raw food recalled was sold under the brands Backmans Greyhound Supplies Chopped and Maffra Knackery Chopped and is believed to have been sold between 31 May and 3 July.
Shortly before this, the agriculture ministry of Victoria had asked pet owners across the state not to feed their pets with raw meat from the Gippsland region. The ministry was alerted to the deaths on 29 June and made the statutory body PrimeSafe aware on 2 July.
