According to calculations by the Prom'Animal association, the French market for pet products grew in 2015 by 2.9 per cent to € 4.886 bn compared to the previous year. And when looking back on the last five years, growth is even 18 per cent. The determining factors in the industry are the animal groups dogs and cats, whose sales are each estimated at over € 2 bn. This means that together they make up a market share of 84 per cent. When comparing these two animal groups, it can be seen that dogs are currently developing more dynamically than cats - a development which isn't only seen in France, it has become a global phenomenon. In 2015 the market for canine products grew by 3.9 per cent to € 2.040 bn. In the past five years the segment has grown by as much as 22 per cent. Cats, on the other hand, only increased sales in 2015 by 1.8 per cent to € 2.051 bn. In the past five years the increase in sales was 17 per cent.

It shows that interest in nature is growing in France. This also explains why hobby farming is becoming more and more popular in France. Products for poultry and other pets recorded a growth in sales of 6 per cent to € 201 mio in 2015. When looking back at development over the past five years, an increase in sales of 65 per cent can even be seen for this product group. Therefore this segment has also achieved the same level in terms of sales as aquatics, which continues to drop. In 2015 sales amounted to € 204 mio. That is a drop in sales of 4 per cent compared to the previous year. In the past five years aquatics even showed a loss of 13 per cent.

Reptiles are on the up

Unfortunately aquatics isn't the only segment which is developing downwards in France. The garden ponds product group, which made sales of € 48 mio in 2015, sank by 6 per cent between 2011 and 2015. In 2015 there was no increase for this segment, however there was no further drop either. The animal group rodents also continues to find itself in a downward trend. It managed sales of € 150 mio in 2015 which was the same…
