Sunrise/Florida-based Pet Supermarket on Monday announced a merger with Canada's Pet Valu in a deal that's expected to generate approximately $1 bn in sales.
The companies say their new brand, Pet Retail Brands, would create the third largest pet speciality retailer and the largest small-format, neighbourhood, pet speciality retailer in North America. The combined brands would command 930 stores across Canada and the US. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The companies are affiliates of multibillion-dollar private equity firm Roark Capital, which took Pet Valu private in August 2009 and acquired Pet Supermarket in April 2015.
Both Pet Supermarket and Pet Valu will remain headquartered in their current home cities. Pet Supermarket CEO and president Diane Holtz announced her retirement upon the closing of the transaction.
Thomas McNeely will become president and CEO of Pet Retail Brands upon the closing of the transaction. McNeely has been CEO of Pet Valu since August 2009.
